Character Name: Lavi
Series: D. Gray-Man
Age: 18
Physical Description: Lavi is 177 centimeters tall and appears rather gangly. He has red hair which, when he knows he has to fight, is held off his face with a green headband. When allowed to fall loose, he has bangs almost down to his eyes and his hair reaches his collar in back.
He has one visible green eye; the other is covered by an eyepatch because it was blinded in a fighting mishap. His clothing tends toward dark suits, as dictated by his mentor, although he does wear some jewelry -- rings and a wristlet -- to personalize his appearance. He also has a hoop earring in each ear; this is very common among junior members of the group he belongs to, the Bookmen.
Personality: Lavi appears on the surface to be something of a prankster. He likes making jokes at people’s expense (he has been known to draw on the faces of sleeping friends) and he has little respect for authority -- he continually addresses his mentor as “old geezer” or “Panda.” He also likes to tease people if he thinks that he can get a reaction from them.
When he gets angry, he tends toward raging fury, especially when someone that he cares about has been hurt. He doesn’t easily forgive in such cases.
However, Lavi is a lot more multi-faceted than he appears. He has a keen mind and an extremely strong photographic memory -- he can look at something and remember the tiniest details later, which makes him invaluable for infomation-gathering. Spare time is spent in intellectual pursuits -- he can frequently be found in libraries. And his biggest secret is that his happy exterior hides a deep-seated uncertainty over whether he’s really doing what he should be doing, and whether he belongs with the Bookmen at all.
Abilities/Strengths/Weaponry: Lavi has been trained to fight with a rather large hammer that he carries with him at all times. He has learned to be extremely fast with it, and has had training in a number of martial arts to back that up. He will not hesitate to bring the hammer out when needed, and usually makes a big show out of using it, so that his opponents know exactly who they are dealing with.
His primary abilities, though, are mental -- in addition to his formidable memory, he can think his way out of almost any situation and smooth-talk himself out of a jam, which is why the Bookmen find him to be invaluable.
Weaknesses He can be overconfident in his own abilities sometimes, and his brashness and recklessness can get him into heavy trouble. He also has trouble taking directions -- especially when they come from those above him. The insecurities that drag him down from time to time have affected his job performance at least once, when an enemy figured out that his heart was not always entirely in what he was doing.
His biggest weakness, however, may be that he cares too much about other people for what he’s doing -- his mentor always tells him “A Bookman has no need for a heart,” but he can’t help but be constantly reminded that he has one.
History: Lavi originally came from a lower-class family that raised itself up to fairly prosperous through scholarship, work and dedication. His early years were spent going to a decent school and living in a comfortable neighborhood. This all changed, however, when an uprising struck their village and a group of lower-class citizens, resentful of the businessmen, killed Lavi’s parents. The boy was left to fend for himself in the post-battle chaos, where he developed his street smarts and was discovered by a member of a criminal organization called the Bookmen.
The Bookmen were something of the brain trust of the Eternal Lotus -- they ran their many shadowy businesses, including gambling dens and brothels, with a few above-ground businesses to lend them an air of respectability. The head of the group, a diminuitive man who always had dark circles around his eyes, was known to members and outsiders alike as simply Bookman. He was immediately impressed with the young apprentice who had been brought into the group, and took Lavi under his wing to personally train him to be his successor.
Lavi gets sent out by Bookman to accomplish various tasks for him, observes his master at work and keeps records of their activities, the last being considered an especially important part of his duties.
DISCLAIMER: This is a character journal for the
three_crossings RP community. Lavi was created by Hoshino Katsura for the manga D. Gray-Man, published by Jump Comics. Character isn't mine, I'm just borrowing him for a little while.
